New approach aims to stop Post-Surgery confusion in elderly cancer patients

NCT ID NCT03012984

Summary

This large study tested whether adding a medication called dexmedetomidine to standard pain control could reduce the risk of delirium (sudden, severe confusion) in older adults recovering from cancer surgery. Researchers enrolled 1,500 patients aged 65 and older who were having major cancer operations. They wanted to see if this drug, given through the patient's pain pump after surgery, could improve sleep quality and lower the chances of developing this serious complication.
