Could a lighter sedation improve heart procedure recovery?

NCT ID NCT07621432

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares deep sedation using a combination of three drugs (dexmedetomidine, remimazolam, and remifentanil) to standard general anaesthesia for patients undergoing a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). The goal is to see if deep sedation can make the procedure safer, more comfortable, and more efficient. Eighty adults with atrial fibrillation will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dexmedetomidine, remimazolam, and remifentanil

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that deep sedation is a safe and effective alternative to general anaesthesia for this heart procedure, potentially improving patient comfort and hospital efficiency.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The sedation approach may not be as effective or safe as general anaesthesia in some cases.
