First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether dapagliflozin, a drug normally used for diabetes, can help reduce depression symptoms when added to standard antidepressant treatment. Sixty adults with moderate to severe depression will receive either dapagliflozin plus fluoxetine or fluoxetine alone. The goal is to see if the combination leads to greater improvement in mood and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Dapagliflozin
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new, repurposed treatment option for depression, especially for people who don't respond well to current antidepressants.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early, small Phase 1/2 trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Dapagliflozin is not yet proven for depression and may cause side effects like dehydration or urinary infections.
