Could cheap supplements cut heart failure risks? large trial launches

NCT ID NCT06694727

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

Heart failure is a serious condition with a poor outlook despite modern treatments. This large Danish trial will test whether two common supplements—coenzyme Q10 and selenium—can help. About 4,044 adults with heart failure will take either the supplements or placebos for 2-3 years. Researchers will track how many are hospitalized for heart failure or die from heart problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

coenzyme Q10 and selenium supplements

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, safe, and cheap way to lower the risk of heart failure complications like hospital stays or death.

What could go wrong

This is a large trial, but earlier smaller studies may not hold up. Supplements might not provide significant benefit over standard care, and results could take years to confirm.
