Heart attack diagnosis gets a Sex-Specific upgrade: new study tests fairer troponin cutoffs
NCT ID NCT05336435
First seen May 21, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether using different blood test thresholds for men and women can help doctors more accurately diagnose heart attacks. Current tests use the same cutoff for everyone, but healthy women naturally have lower troponin levels than men, which may lead to missed heart attacks in women. The trial involved nearly 5,000 patients across 22 Danish hospitals and compared the new sex-specific cutoffs to the standard approach. The goal was to see if this change leads to better treatment and fewer future heart problems for both sexes.
