Brain tumor trial delivers targeted toxin directly into tumors
NCT ID NCT02303678
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This phase 1 study tested a drug called D2C7-IT in 81 adults with recurrent malignant glioma (a type of brain tumor). The drug is a lab-made antibody linked to a toxin that targets specific proteins on tumor cells. It was infused directly into the tumor over 72 hours using thin tubes placed during a biopsy. The main goal was to find the safest dose and look for side effects, while also tracking how long patients lived.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
D2C7-IT (a lab-made antibody linked to a toxin that targets certain brain tumor cells)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for people with recurrent malignant brain tumors that are hard to treat.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 1 trial focused on safety and dosing, not yet on effectiveness. The treatment is invasive (delivered directly into the brain) and may cause serious side effects. Many experimental brain tumor treatments fail in later stages.
