New antibody treatment aims to shield transplant patients from dangerous virus
NCT ID NCT05370976
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a drug called Cytotect, which contains antibodies against the CMV virus, to prevent CMV infection in people who had a stem cell transplant and developed graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). These patients are at high risk for CMV, and current antiviral drugs often cause serious side effects. The trial was very small and was stopped early, so we cannot draw firm conclusions about how well Cytotect works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Cytotect (hyperimmune anti-CMV immunoglobulin)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a safer way to prevent CMV infection in high-risk transplant patients, avoiding the severe side effects of current antiviral drugs.
What could go wrong
This was a very small, early-phase trial that was terminated early with only 2 participants, so results are not reliable. The drug may not prevent CMV infection effectively.
