Blood test may spare thousands from unnecessary cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT06040632
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a blood test that detects tumor DNA can accurately identify patients who still have cancer after local removal of early-stage colorectal cancer. Currently, many patients undergo additional surgery even though about 85% are already cured by the initial procedure. If the blood test works, it could help doctors decide who truly needs more surgery and who can safely avoid it. The study involves 67 participants in Denmark.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) blood test
What this could lead to
If accurate, this blood test could help many patients avoid unnecessary follow-up surgery after early colorectal cancer removal.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study (67 people) in Denmark, so results may not apply broadly. The test may not reliably detect all residual cancers.
