MRI scans may help prevent intestinal damage in Crohn's disease
NCT ID NCT04973423
First seen Jul 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether adding regular MRI scans to standard monitoring (stool tests and symptom checks) can improve outcomes for people with Crohn's disease who are starting biotherapy. Crohn's is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can damage the full thickness of the intestinal wall, often leading to surgery. The study compares two groups: one receiving standard tight control with stool tests, and another also getting two additional MRI scans. The goal is to see if the MRI group spends more time in symptom-free remission without steroids.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- MRI scans added to standard monitoring
- What this could lead to
- If successful, adding MRI scans to standard monitoring could help prevent intestinal damage and reduce the need for surgery in Crohn's disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage trial, and the added benefit of MRI over standard monitoring may be modest. MRI is also more costly and less accessible than stool tests.
