Can cough training and a natural inhaler silence chronic cough?

NCT ID NCT06960759

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests two treatments for people with chronic cough that hasn't improved with usual care. One treatment teaches techniques to control coughing, and the other adds an inhaled natural substance meant to reduce cough sensitivity. Researchers will measure how well participants can suppress coughs, how their brain responds, and whether their quality of life improves. The trial involves 135 adults and includes a no-treatment control group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

behavioral cough suppression therapy and an inhaled natural substance (capsaicin) to desensitize sensory nerves

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new, non-drug treatment option for people with chronic cough that hasn't responded to standard therapies.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 135 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The natural substance is inhaled and may cause irritation or not work better than the behavioral therapy alone.
