Can a vibrating wire reopen completely blocked heart arteries?
NCT ID NCT05813704
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests a new device designed to help doctors reopen coronary arteries that are completely blocked, a condition called chronic total occlusion. The device makes the tip of a guidewire vibrate at high frequency, which may help it safely cross the tough, fibrous cap of the blockage. The study will enroll about 159 adults with symptoms of angina and evidence of reduced blood flow to the heart. The main goal is to see if the device can successfully cross the blockage and restore blood flow, while also checking its safety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Coronary Crossing System, a device that vibrates the tip of a guidewire to penetrate blocked coronary arteries
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this device could offer a new way to reopen completely blocked heart arteries, potentially improving blood flow and reducing symptoms in patients who are hard to treat.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial with a modest number of participants. The device may not always cross the blockage, and there are risks of complications like vessel damage or heart rhythm issues.
