Can a smartwatch and virtual rehab keep COPD patients out of the hospital?

NCT ID NCT06253013

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a program that includes virtual pulmonary rehabilitation, integrated care, and remote monitoring using a smartwatch and home spirometer is feasible for people with COPD after a recent flare-up. Researchers will enroll 100 patients and track how many complete the program, how acceptable it is to patients and doctors, and actual usage over 90 days. The goal is to see if this approach can be used more widely to support recovery at home.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a home-based program with virtual rehab and remote monitoring is practical for COPD patients after a hospital stay, potentially improving recovery and reducing readmissions.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study (100 participants) with no control group, so it cannot prove effectiveness. Results may not apply to all COPD patients, and the technology might be difficult for some to use.
