Antibiotic trial aims to stop COPD attacks by targeting hidden fungus

NCT ID NCT07665359

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a 4-week course of the antibiotic TMP-SMX (Bactrim) can reduce the number of serious COPD flare-ups in people whose lungs carry Pneumocystis jirovecii, a common fungus. Researchers will compare the antibiotic to a placebo in 630 adults with advanced COPD who have had at least one flare-up in the past year. Participants will be followed for one year to track flare-ups and lung function.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), also known as Bactrim or Sulfatrim

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to prevent COPD flare-ups by treating a hidden infection in the lungs.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no phase assigned, so results are uncertain. The antibiotic may not clear the fungus or reduce flare-ups, and could cause side effects like allergic reactions or antibiotic resistance.
