Ultrasound might reveal hidden lung damage in COPD
NCT ID NCT07757126
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a simple lung ultrasound can tell the difference between a sudden COPD flare-up and stable disease. It will compare ultrasound images, breathing tests, and exercise ability in about 60 people—those with an acute exacerbation, those with stable COPD, and healthy controls. The goal is to see if ultrasound findings, like B-lines and consolidations, relate to how breathless patients feel and how well they can move. If it works, lung ultrasound could become a quick, non-invasive way to check disease severity at the bedside.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could establish lung ultrasound as a reliable bedside tool to quickly assess COPD severity and guide management.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, observational study, so results may not apply broadly. Ultrasound findings may not strongly correlate with symptoms or function.
