Ultrasound vs. MRI: which spots hidden liver cancer better?

NCT ID NCT06184152

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This study compares two imaging methods—contrast-enhanced ultrasound and abbreviated MRI—to see which is better at detecting early-stage liver cancer (HCC) in people with suspicious but not yet cancerous liver nodules. Researchers will enroll 600 adults with cirrhosis and indeterminate liver nodules at three medical centers. The goal is to find the most accurate and practical test for early detection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and abbreviated MRI (AMRI)

What this could lead to

If one method proves more accurate, it could become the preferred way to detect early liver cancer, potentially catching more cases sooner.

What could go wrong

This is a diagnostic comparison study, not a treatment trial. Results may show no clear winner, and findings may not apply to all patients or settings.
