Can small rewards keep opioid users clean? new study tests incentives in hospital
NCT ID NCT07208266
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a behavioral program called contingency management for people with opioid use disorder. Participants in an inpatient unit receive small rewards when they provide drug-free urine samples. The goal is to see if this approach helps them stay abstinent during their two-week stay and reduces relapse risk afterward. The trial will enroll 55 adults and track urine tests and relapse warning signs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
contingency management (behavioral intervention with rewards)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to improve abstinence and reduce relapse risk for people with opioid use disorder.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 55 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The rewards are small and may not sustain long-term abstinence after discharge.
