New study pits two surgeries against each other for pelvic organ prolapse

NCT ID NCT06903988

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two surgical methods for treating pelvic organ prolapse, a condition where pelvic organs drop from their normal position. Researchers will randomly assign 86 women to receive either laparoscopic lateral suspension (a keyhole surgery) or transvaginal sacrospinous ligament fixation (a vaginal surgery). The goal is to see if the keyhole approach is as effective as the standard vaginal surgery at one year after the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgical procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a less invasive laparoscopic surgery works as well as the standard vaginal surgery for treating pelvic organ prolapse.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center trial with only 86 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both surgeries carry risks like infection or recurrence.
