Which tool is safer for obese patients' airways? new study compares two video intubation devices
NCT ID NCT06981923
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two video-guided devices (CMAC D-Blade and CMAC Video Stylet) in 150 obese adults undergoing bariatric surgery. The goal was to see which device allows doctors to place a breathing tube more easily and safely on the first try. Participants had a higher risk of difficult intubation based on a standard airway risk score. The findings could help guide device choice for similar patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CMAC D-Blade and CMAC Video Stylet (medical devices)
What this could lead to
If one device proves better, it could help doctors choose the safest tool for intubating obese patients, reducing complications during surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a completed, moderate-sized study, but results may not apply to all hospitals or patients. Both devices are already in use, so no major breakthrough is expected.
