Neighborhood gyms may boost walking ability after leg artery treatment

NCT ID NCT04252950

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a community-based exercise program can improve walking ability and heart health in people with peripheral artery disease who have recently had a procedure to open blocked leg arteries. Researchers will enroll 30 participants and measure how long they can walk on a treadmill before leg pain stops them. The goal is to see if a convenient, local exercise option works as well as hospital-based programs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

community-based structured exercise therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a convenient, community-based exercise program is a practical way to help people with peripheral artery disease walk farther and feel better after artery-opening treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercise program may not provide additional benefit beyond the artery-opening procedure alone.
