Simple antibacterial wash could slash deadly graft infections in vascular surgery

NCT ID NCT07678632

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether washing the surgical wound and the new prosthetic graft with a hypochlorous acid solution at the end of surgery can prevent infections. Participants are adults having open surgery to insert a synthetic bypass graft for narrowed or blocked arteries. The study will track infections for 12 months and also assess whether a larger trial is feasible.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

hypochlorous acid

What this could lead to

If effective, this simple wash could become a standard step in vascular surgery, preventing life-threatening graft infections and reducing amputations and deaths.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study, so results may not be conclusive. The solution might not reduce infection rates enough to justify a larger trial, and individual patient factors could affect outcomes.
