Can a portable pedal exerciser help people with severe leg artery disease walk better?

NCT ID NCT07655206

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests whether a 12-week home-based exercise program using a small pedal exerciser can help people with moderate-to-severe peripheral artery disease (PAD) walk farther and feel better. Twelve adults with severe PAD will be randomly assigned to either the home exercise program plus standard care, or standard care alone. The study will measure how feasible and acceptable the program is, and look at changes in walking distance, blood flow, and quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

home-based exercise therapy using a portable pedal exerciser

What this could lead to

If this pilot works, it could point toward a practical, accessible way for people with severe PAD to exercise at home and improve their walking ability and quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 12 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The program requires motivation and adherence, and it is not yet known if it is better than standard care.
