New cocktail of drugs and targeted procedure aims to control liver cancer

NCT ID NCT04472767

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial is testing a combination of three drugs (cabozantinib, ipilimumab, and nivolumab) plus a procedure called TACE in 35 people with liver cancer that cannot be cured by surgery or transplant. The goal is to see if this approach can stop the cancer from growing for at least 6 months. Participants will receive the drugs and up to 3 TACE sessions over several weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cabozantinib, ipilimumab, nivolumab, and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could offer a new treatment option to control liver cancer and extend life for patients who cannot have surgery or a transplant.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 35 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The combination of drugs and TACE can cause serious side effects, and it is not yet known if it works better than standard treatments.
