Could a decades-old arthritis drug protect dialysis patients' hearts and veins?
NCT ID NCT07762807
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether low-dose colchicine, an inexpensive anti-inflammatory drug, is safe and acceptable for people on hemodialysis. Researchers will give 100 dialysis patients colchicine for about 3 months, monitoring side effects and how many stick with it. The goal is to see if a larger trial is possible to test whether colchicine can reduce heart attacks and strokes and help dialysis access points last longer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- colchicine 0.5 mg taken orally once daily for 3 months and 2 weeks
- What this could lead to
- If tolerated, colchicine could reduce heart attacks and strokes in dialysis patients and help their vascular access last longer, potentially improving survival and quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small feasibility study, not a large efficacy trial. Dialysis patients may not tolerate colchicine well, and any benefits remain unproven until larger trials are done.
