Blood thinner may stop autoimmune disease before it starts

NCT ID NCT05098704

First seen Jul 07, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether clopidogrel, a common blood thinner, can prevent systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) in people who have Raynaud phenomenon and specific antibodies that put them at high risk. About 47% of such individuals develop full scleroderma within five years. Participants take either clopidogrel or a placebo daily for two years, and researchers track how many develop the disease over five years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
clopidogrel
What this could lead to
If it works, this could be the first preventive treatment to stop scleroderma from developing in people with early warning signs.
What could go wrong
