First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether educational events about clean beauty products could help Black women in Newark, NJ reduce their exposure to potentially harmful chemicals found in hair products. Researchers surveyed 38 attendees before, right after, and three months after a clean beauty event to see if they planned to change their hair routines or perceptions of product safety. The study was terminated early, so results are limited.

Education on chemical exposure prevention
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could empower communities to make safer choices about personal care products and reduce health risks from harmful chemicals.
What could go wrong
This was a small, terminated study with only 38 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Education alone may not lead to lasting behavior changes.
