First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding a trained community health worker (CHW) to standard care can improve quality of life and advance care planning for African American patients with advanced cancer. 160 patients will either receive standard care or standard care plus CHW support. The CHW helps with communication, understanding palliative care, and addressing social needs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Community health worker (CHW) support
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that trained community health workers help African American patients with advanced cancer feel better and plan their care more effectively.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (160 participants) focused on a specific group, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is supportive, not a treatment for cancer itself.
