Smart patch may replace finger sticks for hospital insulin dosing

NCT ID NCT07194642

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will test whether a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) can safely guide insulin therapy in cancer and transplant patients who are not in the ICU but need IV insulin due to steroids and nutrition. About 80 participants will be randomly assigned to CGM-guided care or standard hourly finger-stick checks. The goal is to see if CGM improves glucose control, reduces low blood sugar, and is preferred by nurses and patients.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make insulin dosing safer and more convenient for hospitalized patients with diabetes who are not in the ICU.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study, so results may not apply broadly. The device measures glucose in interstitial fluid, which can lag behind blood glucose, potentially affecting accuracy.
