New study tests safer stroke prevention for frail elderly with atrial fibrillation

NCT ID NCT07441382

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatment strategies for elderly frail patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who are at high risk for both stroke and bleeding. One group receives catheter ablation plus a device to close the left atrial appendage (LAAO), while the other receives ablation plus standard blood thinners. The goal is to see which approach better prevents stroke, blood clots, and major bleeding over 12 months. The trial will enroll 200 participants aged 75 and older.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

catheter ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion device (Watchman FLX, LAmbre, or LACbes)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a safer, more effective treatment option for elderly frail patients with atrial fibrillation, reducing the need for long-term blood thinners and lowering the risk of both stroke and major bleeding.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small trial (200 participants) and the results may not apply to all patients. The procedures carry risks such as bleeding, infection, or device complications, and the long-term benefits are still uncertain.
