Blood test hunts hidden cancer, drug aims to stop it returning
NCT ID NCT06923527
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tests whether the drug elacestrant can clear traces of cancer DNA found in the blood of people with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who are at risk of late recurrence. About 50 adults whose blood tests positive for tumor DNA but show no visible spread will take elacestrant pills daily for up to a year. Researchers will check if the DNA disappears and if it helps keep cancer from coming back.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Elacestrant (a hormone therapy pill taken daily)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using a blood test to detect leftover cancer DNA and treating with elacestrant helps prevent breast cancer from coming back years later.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with no control group, so results may not be conclusive. Elacestrant can cause nausea, vomiting, and other side effects, and it may not work for everyone.
