Neck artery scan may foretell danger during liver transplants
NCT ID NCT07660679
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study investigates whether measuring the thickness of the carotid artery (a major artery in the neck) before surgery can help predict blood pressure swings and complications during liver transplant operations. Researchers will measure carotid artery thickness using a simple, non-invasive ultrasound in 54 adults scheduled for a liver transplant. They will then track how blood pressure and the need for medications to support blood pressure change during surgery. The goal is to see if this quick scan can identify patients who need extra monitoring or proactive treatment to keep their blood pressure stable during the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors identify high-risk liver transplant patients before surgery and tailor their care to reduce complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study, so it can only suggest a link, not prove cause and effect. The findings may not apply to all liver transplant patients.
