Can a scan predict radiation harm to heart and lungs?
NCT ID NCT04901884
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is looking for early signs of heart and lung damage in people receiving radiation for chest cancers. Researchers will use PET/MR scans and blood tests before and after treatment to see if they can predict who will develop problems like pulmonary hypertension. The goal is to find better ways to monitor and eventually prevent these side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
18F-FDG (a radioactive tracer used in PET scans)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors identify patients at risk of heart or lung damage from chest radiation earlier, potentially guiding personalized follow-up care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early exploratory study with only 40 participants. It is not testing a treatment, so it may not lead to any direct benefit for patients. The markers studied may not prove reliable in larger groups.
