Can cannabis calm a sleep-deprived, anxious brain? new study aims to find out.
NCT ID NCT07656350
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how THC and CBD, two compounds found in cannabis, affect the body's stress response in people who are sleep-deprived and have higher-than-average anxiety. Sixty healthy volunteers will take either THC, CBD, both, or a placebo after a night of restricted sleep. Researchers will measure skin conductance to see how their nervous system reacts to mild electric shocks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
THC and CBD oils
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help explain how cannabis-based products affect the body's stress response after poor sleep, pointing toward future treatments for anxiety or sleep disorders.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. It is designed to measure physiological changes, not to test a treatment. Results may not apply to people with clinical anxiety or sleep conditions.
