Could a Pill-Sized camera replace some colonoscopies?

NCT ID NCT06475560

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a camera capsule that you swallow can be used as a first step to check for colorectal cancer, instead of going straight to a colonoscopy. The capsule takes pictures as it travels through your gut, and if it finds something suspicious, you would still need a colonoscopy. The goal is to see if this approach is less uncomfortable for patients and costs less for the healthcare system. About 800 adults with bowel symptoms will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Colon capsule endoscopy (a swallowed camera capsule)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less invasive, more comfortable first step for colorectal cancer screening, reducing the need for many colonoscopies.
What could go wrong
This is a cost-effectiveness study, not a test of a new treatment. The capsule cannot remove polyps or treat cancer, so many patients will still need a colonoscopy. Results may not apply to all populations.
