Caffeine under the tongue: a quick fix for Post-Surgery grogginess in seniors?
NCT ID NCT07536568
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether giving a caffeine tablet under the tongue at the end of surgery can help elderly patients (65 and older) wake up faster and feel less agitated after general anesthesia. Half of the 50 participants will get caffeine, the other half a placebo. The goal is to see if this simple approach can speed recovery and improve comfort after eye surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
caffeine citrate
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help elderly patients recover more quickly and calmly after surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all elderly patients. Caffeine can also cause side effects like rapid heart rate or anxiety.
