First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a program called BSAFE that uses counseling, text reminders, and help connecting to care to reduce overdose risk in people who use stimulants like cocaine or methamphetamine and may accidentally use fentanyl. 160 adults will be randomly assigned to the BSAFE program or a control group watching videos. Researchers will track overdoses and fentanyl use over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
behavioral intervention (counseling, text reminders, linkage to care)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective, low-cost program to prevent accidental fentanyl overdoses in people who use stimulants.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage behavioral trial. The intervention may not change behavior enough to reduce overdoses, and results may not apply to broader populations.
