First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing a special kiosk placed in rural Appalachian Kentucky that provides clean syringes and harm reduction supplies to people who inject drugs. The goal is to see if the kiosk helps reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis C, and lowers the risk of drug overdose. About 752 adults who have used illicit drugs in the past 6 months are taking part across two counties.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Harm reduction kiosk (behavioral intervention)

What this could lead to

If successful, this kiosk could provide a practical way to reduce HIV, hepatitis C, and overdose deaths in rural areas with limited access to harm reduction services.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral intervention study, not a drug trial, so results may vary by community. The kiosk may not reach all at-risk individuals or significantly change long-term risk behaviors.
