Scientists probe gut and lung bacteria to unlock bronchiectasis mysteries
NCT ID NCT05731427
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study follows 150 adults with bronchiectasis for two years to understand how bacteria in the airways and gut influence disease progression. Researchers will also examine how macrolide antibiotics (like azithromycin) work to improve symptoms. Participants provide sputum, stool, and blood samples for advanced analysis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Macrolides (azithromycin or clarithromycin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could clarify how macrolides work in bronchiectasis and why some patients get worse, potentially guiding better treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study with some drug treatment, not a controlled trial. It may not prove cause and effect, and results may not apply to all patients.
