Breathing workouts could give knee pain sufferers a leg up
NCT ID NCT07738627
First seen Jul 31, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether adding inspiratory muscle training (IMT) — breathing exercises using a resistance device — to usual care can improve cardiopulmonary endurance and functional mobility in people with knee osteoarthritis. Adults aged 40-65 with bilateral knee osteoarthritis will be assigned to either real IMT or a sham version, alongside standard treatment. Over six weeks, researchers will measure walking endurance, mobility, pain, and quality of life to see if stronger breathing muscles translate into better daily function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Inspiratory muscle training using a POWERbreathe device
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this could offer a simple, drug-free addition to standard care that improves walking endurance and daily mobility for people with knee osteoarthritis.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and the benefits may be modest or not outweigh the effort. The sham device is designed to mimic training, so results may not show a clear advantage.
