Five minutes a day: breathing training may tame pregnancy blood pressure

NCT ID NCT07687745

First seen Jul 07, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a simple breathing exercise, called Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST), can safely lower blood pressure in pregnant women during their third trimester. Participants do 5 to 8 minutes of breathing against light or moderate resistance each day for six weeks at home. The goal is to see if this easy, drug-free approach can help prevent or reduce high blood pressure disorders in pregnancy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST)
What this could lead to
If effective, this simple home-based breathing exercise could offer a safe, drug-free way to help manage blood pressure during pregnancy.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 80 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The breathing exercise may not lower blood pressure significantly, and some women may find it uncomfortable.
