Brain zaps for depression: which pattern works best?
NCT ID NCT06976840
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests three types of non-invasive brain stimulation (intermittent, continuous, and sham) in 200 adults with major depression. Participants receive each type in separate sessions while undergoing MRI scans and mood assessments. The goal is to understand how different stimulation patterns affect brain networks and mood, and how they might work with antidepressant medications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intermittent theta burst stimulation, continuous theta burst stimulation, and sham theta burst stimulation (all delivered via a device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could point toward more effective, personalized brain stimulation strategies for treating depression.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage, observational study focused on brain activity and mood changes, not a treatment trial. Results may not lead to immediate clinical benefits.
