Laxative before dialysis catheter insertion may reduce blockages
NCT ID NCT07351357
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether taking a laxative (bisacodyl) for two days before getting a peritoneal dialysis catheter can prevent blockages. About 398 adults needing dialysis will be randomly assigned to receive the laxative or usual care. The goal is to see if this simple step reduces the need for procedures to fix catheter drainage problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Bisacodyl 5 mg (a laxative)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to reduce catheter blockages in people starting peritoneal dialysis.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial, but it's still early and results may not apply to all patients. The laxative could cause side effects like diarrhea or cramping.
