Could your own bone marrow fix jaw pain? new trial tests it

NCT ID NCT07536399

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether injecting a concentrate of your own bone marrow (BMAC) into the jaw joint during arthroscopy reduces pain and damage better than a standard steroid shot. Twenty adults with long-lasting TMJ pain will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments and followed for 6 months with questionnaires and MRIs. The goal is to see if this natural approach can calm inflammation and improve jaw function.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and corticosteroid

What this could lead to

If BMAC works better than steroids, it could offer a longer-lasting, natural treatment for TMJ pain and joint damage.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 20 people. BMAC is experimental for TMJ, and results may not apply to everyone. Risks include pain or infection from the bone marrow harvest.
