New Bladder-Sparing combo aims to avoid surgery in cancer patients

NCT ID NCT07663747

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether a combination of two drugs—enfortumab vedotin (Padcev) and pembrolizumab (Keytruda)—can help people with muscle-invasive bladder cancer avoid bladder removal. About 56 participants will receive the drugs first, and those who respond well may get radiation or just observation instead of surgery. The goal is to see if this approach keeps the cancer away while preserving the bladder for at least two years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Enfortumab vedotin (Padcev) plus pembrolizumab (Keytruda)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could allow many patients with bladder cancer to keep their bladder instead of having it removed, while still controlling the disease.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 56 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The combination therapy can cause significant side effects, and some patients may still need surgery or radiation.
