Routine urine tests could spot bladder cancer early in smokers and factory workers
NCT ID NCT05646485
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether regular urine tests every 6 months can find bladder cancer earlier in people at high risk, such as smokers over 50 and those with long-term workplace chemical exposure. Researchers will enroll 1,000 participants and track how many cancers are detected. The goal is to develop a simple, non-invasive screening strategy for a cancer that currently has no standard screening method.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
urine test
What this could lead to
If successful, this could establish a simple, regular urine test as a standard way to catch bladder cancer early in high-risk people, potentially saving lives.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage screening study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove that earlier detection improves outcomes, and false positives could cause unnecessary worry or procedures.
