New combo ablation aims to tame stubborn AFib
NCT ID NCT07633509
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether adding extra ablation lines to the standard pulsed-field ablation procedure helps people with long-standing atrial fibrillation (AF) stay in normal heart rhythm. 430 participants with AF lasting 1-3 years will be randomly assigned to receive either standard PFA or PFA plus additional radiofrequency and ethanol ablation. The main goal is to see if the more extensive procedure reduces AF recurrence at 12 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Pulsed-field ablation and radiofrequency ablation catheters, plus ethanol infusion into the vein of Marshall
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a more effective procedure that helps more people with long-standing atrial fibrillation stay in normal heart rhythm for longer.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no results yet. The extra ablation may not improve outcomes and could increase procedure time or complication risks.
