Simple leaflet may help seniors rethink sleeping pills
NCT ID NCT07474532
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving older hospital patients an educational leaflet about benzodiazepines (medications for sleep and anxiety) changes their attitudes toward reducing or stopping these drugs. Researchers will survey 96 geriatric patients at two time points to see if their beliefs become more open to deprescribing. The goal is to understand if a low-cost information tool can help address the risks of long-term benzodiazepine use in older adults.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
educational information leaflet (EMPOWER brochure)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a simple leaflet helps older patients feel more open to safely reducing their benzodiazepine use.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (96 participants) that only measures attitudes, not actual deprescribing. Results may not apply to other settings or lead to behavior change.
