Can beetroot juice shield blood vessels from Vaccine-Related inflammation?
NCT ID NCT04889274
First seen Sep 25, 2026 ยท Last updated Sep 25, 2026
Summary
Researchers are investigating whether dietary nitrate, found in beetroot juice, can protect blood vessels from inflammation caused by COVID-19 vaccination. The trial enrolls 42 healthy men and women aged 18 to 60 who are scheduled to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Participants receive either nitrate-rich beetroot juice or a nitrate-depleted version, and researchers measure blood vessel function and markers of inflammation before and after vaccination. The study also compares how men and women respond to the vaccine.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Beetroot juice containing dietary nitrate
- What this could lead to
- If nitrate helps, it could offer a simple dietary way to protect blood vessels from inflammation after vaccination, and clarify whether men and women respond differently.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study of 42 healthy volunteers. It may not show a clear effect, and results in healthy young adults may not apply to other groups.
