Beetroot juice may boost heart recovery in diabetes

NCT ID NCT07560800

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will test whether a single dose of beetroot juice can improve blood pressure and heart rate recovery after light cycling in adults with type 2 diabetes. About 20 participants aged 40-65 will receive either beetroot juice or a placebo in random order. The goal is to see if the nitrates in beetroot juice help blood vessels relax and speed up recovery after exercise.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Beetroot juice (nitrate-rich dietary supplement)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help people with type 2 diabetes manage blood pressure and recover better after exercise.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply widely. The effect is acute (single dose) and may not translate to long-term benefits.
