Can a simple drink before surgery tame blood sugar spikes in colorectal cancer patients?
NCT ID NCT05494658
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether drinking a mix of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) a few hours before colorectal cancer surgery could help prevent high blood sugar afterward. About 79 patients were split into two groups: one got a BCAA drink, the other plain water. The goal was to see if the BCAA group had fewer blood sugar spikes. However, the trial was stopped early, so we don't have clear answers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
branched-chain amino acids (BCAA)
What this could lead to
If it worked, this could point toward a simple way to lower blood sugar spikes after colorectal cancer surgery, potentially reducing complications.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early, so results are limited. It was a small study (79 people) and only tested a short-term effect, so any benefit is uncertain.
