Bacterial lysate shows promise in preventing infant wheeze after bronchiolitis

NCT ID NCT05064631

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether a bacterial lysate (Broncho Vaxom) can prevent wheezing in infants who were hospitalized for severe bronchiolitis. 173 infants received either the lysate or a placebo for up to 24 months. The goal was to see if the treatment reduces the number of wheeze episodes in the first year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Bacterial lysate (Broncho Vaxom)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple way to prevent wheezing and asthma in infants after severe bronchiolitis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (phase 2) with only 173 infants. The treatment may not reduce wheeze episodes, and long-term benefits are uncertain.
